hey all still sorting things out on my new build and have been looking at some V-rails and bearings but don't know if they are big enough for my gantrys Y axis. what I am looking at is McMaster's 1/4" wide 3/16" deep/high v-rail and VXB's 3/8"id v-groove bearings that I am thinking about mounting to a piece of 3060 extrusion for Y carriage and Z carriage. main reason is i am trying to reduce my overhang as much as possible and second is the prices. I was thinking of making V bearings with skate bearings and mahine housing on lathe but for $10 a bearing its not worth it if these will work ok. also thought about trying to mill V edge on 1/4" steel but at 6' i don't think i could do it accurate enough. if any body has used these products id like to here what you think thanks |

| I think it would be strong enough as long as you plan to route wood. I'm using a similar v bearing on a 4'X3' machine. As far as accuracy, these bearings don't seem to require a high degree of accuracy. I got away with angling the edge of angle iron using a grinding wheel on a table saw. I think you need to also consider the strength of the base you are putting those rails on. good luck. |
