Help with wiring!

I am just about finished with my build, pics to come soon.... I have all the mechanical aspects figured out and done. Now its time for the wiring. I need specific wiring instructions to wire my 3 steppers, limit/home switches, E-stop, and a relay to turn on and off the router when using Mach3. Also one of those X-box controllers would be cool to jog the machine, Can I use the wireless ones? I need total help with this part as this will be the first one I have done.

Here is the list of equipmnet I need wired.

1) gecko G540

2) steppers http://www.kelinginc.net/KL23H2100-35-4B.pdf

Do I need to add something between the stepper and the G540 besides wire?

3) limit switches with both a N/O and N/C post.

I am also looking for some wire track/chain that has a tight bend radius.

Well, I am a little ahead of you in my build, so while I am not an expert, maybe I can help a little.

My suggestion is that you focus on getting the basic wiring done first:
1. Wire the power supply (you do have a power supply, right?). You will need an AC cord to plug it into a wall socket. Then you will need to hook the power supply to the Gecko per the Gecko instructions.

2. You will need to wire each motor per Keling instructions to the Gecko 540 through a DB9 plug. You also need a current set resistor according to the motor amperage - sized at 1000 ohms per amp of motor current. If your motors are 3.5 amp, you will need 3.5 k ohm resistors. This resistor gets hooked between pins one and five of each DB9 connector, per Gecko 540 instructions.

3. You need to wire an e-stop per the Gecko 540 instructions.

This should get everything moving. You could later add the home/limit switches and a relay to get the router motor on or off under software control, but those are really optional.

Here is the ref to Gecko instructions/wiring diagram:http://www.geckodrive.com/upload/G54...3%20MANUAL.pdf

Ok that helps a lot. I had seen that before I had forgot about it though. I really do want to go ahead and do the switches and the relay for the router on/off control. On that diagram it has a part called relay power supply. Is this an additional power supply besides the one required to power the G540 and the steppers? Ans yes I do have that one already.

Now.... my switches look like the ones inthe diagram as well with the NO and NC post. Can I wire these switches to execute both home and limit functions?

You are quickly getting out of my league...but here goes...

The gecko 540 wiring diagram shows a DC relay with a separate power supply to activate the router. You will have to get a DC relay recommendation from others. Sorry, I can't help more.

If you search the website here on home and limit switches, you will find posts from those that have wired them together...so it can be done. My preference would be separate home switches that activate before the limits. That way, the limits would only activate if your machine goes crazy.

I would suggest that you start out without a lot of the more complex parts and add more as you get success.

So, start by getting the power supply and one axis turning with the Gecko, power supply and stepper.

Then add the second axis and then the third.

Then, probably add the e-stop switch, then the limit switches. I think you will find that most people use the NC terminal and run all the limit switches in series -- common of one switch to NC of the next, all the way around, and then wire the common of the first switch and the NC of the last switch to the gecko, so every terminal only has ONE wire.

Then add home switches. It seems most people use separate pins on the gecko for each limit switch, and usually you use the NO connection for each switch. That uses 3 of the gecko inputs, and there aren't too many of them.

I would save the relay for the router last. You can turn the router on and off manually for a while. Since you can't use the Mach 3 speed control, you need to make sure that is set right anyway, so the relay is not critical for a while.

There are threads in this board about pendents, search for them.
