this is my first build . the x axis has a 10 foot travel , the y axis has a 4 foot travel , the z axis has a 20 inch travel. the gantry that travels the x axis rides on 4 = 1 inch open linear bearings and the rail is supported every 11 inches. the y axis rides on 4 = 3/4 inch closed bearings the z axis rides on 4 = 3/4 inch closed bearings i'm using 5/8 -8 acme rod for my lead screws the frame and the gantry are good ole steel and everything on the y slide and the z slide are aluminum i'm not sure how to size the stepper motors,, i'm planning on using this for wood using a router . i need help in the stepper motor area as far as what size ,,, ie: oz in any help would be appreciated |

| 3/4" rails will be quite bouncy at a length of 4 feet without being supported. They will have some considerable deflection. As for your stepper motor question, do you want steppers or servos? Also, what's your budget (if anything)? - Jesse |

| Also, you're 5/8-8 screws will be extremely slow for a 10' long machine.

| No No no , maybe i didn;t make the question clear enough -- i asked for help sizing the stepper motors for "this" machine. i did not ask to be critiqued on the build . i know the 3/4 rails not being supported are not going to be solid as a rock and i know that it is going to be a little slow. and no where did i even mention servo's ! if you do not know the answer to the question that is ok ,, don't try to take me off course !! wow that reminds me of my wife! |

| I'd say you need to find some steppers suitable to run your machine. Maybe about yah big or so. Tongue in cheek man.If you want to see what others have done on like sized machines and just bypass all the input from the totally helpful members of the zone, then simply check out the build logs and see what others have successfully used and where they got them. This way you won't need to defend your machine and answer questions about it that would need to be known to make any sort of a suggestion. This ain't the Flame Zone or the Short Fuse Zone. It is the CNC Zone and has many many guys with very good answers and advice, but you have to treat them right and humble yourself and attitude just a bit. They will treat you likewise. Mellower attitudes simply get things done.

| Sounds like it's pretty heavy. How fast do you want to go? The problem with steppers, is that the bigger they are, the slower they'll spin. With the 8tpi screws, they'll need to spin fast to get any speed. To get the most speed, you want the smallest motors you can find that will have enough power to accelerate at a reasonable rate. 8 tpi gives you more mechanical advantage, so you can use slightly smaller motors. As a guess, I'd say 600 oz motors with a high current rating, around 6-7 amps, and gecko G203V's. This is just a guess, and may or may not work for your application. And even though you don't want to hear it, speed is very important when routing wood, or you'll get very poor tool life, and good router bits are expensive.

The previous suggestions for stepper motors cover about everything you need to know. |
