Hmm, puzzling... an automatic puzzle maker. Isn't that what you've got there already?
Kinda reminds me of Escher.
an idea popped into my head early this morning, when i was playing around with JointCAM. is there software out there to automate puzzle piece joinery? i would like to be able to make signs for people, and i think it would look neat if i could join 4 pieces of wood (different species?) with a joint similar to puzzle pieces.
Now, i can draw them fairly easily in CAD, but if i want a repeat along a long joint, it would be easier if i could plug in some values, like material thickness, number of puzzle lobes, height/width of lobes, tightness of joint, etc. then pop out some G-code, and mill out the pieces.
has anybody come across anything like that?

are those puzzle pieces solid through the thickness? or is it veneer inlay?
looks very good either way.

Thanks Ger21, that looks pretty neat, especially the tree shaped joints. not sure how the trees could be done with a router, as the sharp points on the inside would get rounded. but the regular puzzle shapes look great, and it has just the features i was looking for.

not my friend when i searched, all i got was a bunch of unrelated gibberish. google must like you more than me
but then, my computer has been acting a little funny lately... both google and eBay are pokey, and mostly gibberish. all since i added Norton Anti-Virus.
but anyway, thanks!

Hi Travis;
Consider using this search term: "G-code jigsaw puzzle generator" in Google. You will find lots of interesting approaches though I suspect none of them really do everything you want.
I suspect the biggest problem with doing jigsaws on a router is the wasted materials which may be why there are a number of examples for use with lasers. In any event the initial search didn't turn up exactly what you are asking for but there are plenty of approaches that might work for you. Given that I seem to remember reading about somebody trying to do software for routers for this very need a few years ago. Of course I can't remember where nor do I know if they where successful but it might be worth spending an hour or two looking around the web.
Ha!
A solution for creating a puzzle.
Huh?
