The motors that are on the web site do look like DC motors. You are saying that your motor has 5 wires??
Did you purchase them from that website or somewhere else?
I bought what i thought might have been stepper motors from a surplus center yesterday. But the more i look i think they are dc motors . They are Elvi brand which are made in italy i believe. all they say on them is 24v it has 5 wires coming out of it . Here is a link to there webpage the motors i bought look like the 300 series. Do these motors have a useful application in building a cnc router or did i just waste some cash?http://www.softwork.it/Aziende/Elvi/products_uk.htm
Thanks for all your help

Yes they have 5 wires , 3 of the wires come together into a terminal plug and the other two are seperate. I bought these from a shipping company . What uses do these motors have in a cnc application?
My uneducated guess is that these are windshield wiper motors.
Steve
At first sight I thought as you Steve, but I have never seen any windshield wiper motors with 5 wires. Of course that does not mean there arn't)
My best "Fun" guess is a DC speed control motor, I don't think that useful in CNC equipment.
Ken
Ken,
Most wiper motors I’ve seen have two speeds and a circuit to return to their resting position on shut off. This typically requires 4 or 5 wires. The other motors on the ELVI web site look like wiper motors with worm gear head attached.
As an aside, is “ELVI” the plural of “Elvis”?
Steve
DC wiper type motors is also my guess. Not too handy for cnc I am afraid.
I wish it wouldn't crash.
Hi jsatter
There is at least one way to know if the motors are steppers or not. Try to dismantle any kind of reduction in order to set free the axe of the motor and try to move the axe. If when you are moving the axe you can feel like 'steps' in the movement, probably is a stepper. If you cannot feel it or if the axe moves freely, then probably is some kind of DC.
Beware not to dismantle too much because if you 'open' a stepper, you have big chance to demagnetize it and in that case the motor is a serious candidate for the dumpster..
Hope it helps

I see a comm and brushes in there...they are not steppers.
