Another busy day in the shop.
With snow moving in again I needed to replace my edges on the box blade and bucket. Using 1/2" UHMW this time.
The aluminum version lasted a couple seasons.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1046-xl-jpg
Originally though I was just going to be able to drill and c'sink some holes.
But the plow bolts and steel edge had square holes and a large c'sink. So quick design in Vcarve pro and the CNC router duplicated the holes.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1047-xl-jpg
With that out of the way started right into making the speaker parts. First part I used clamps just in case vacuum let it slip. Did not notice anything taking full depth of cuts.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1048-xl-jpg
Next part no clamps just vacuum.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1049-xl-jpg
No problems and finished up the interior bracing. Fit together perfectly.

    Top Bottom and back complete.

One more side left then off to watch the game.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1052-xl-jpg
All test fitted together. Before it is glued together I will make sure the amp and speaker fits.

Vacuum table worked great. Makes it so much easier to do parts like this. No clamps screws etc...

Another successful day using the vacuum table.
Had a small project for my daughters high school musical. The needed some wooden crosses for props.
Re-sawed a piece of Cherry and planed it down to 1/4". Then using a piece of plastic to mask off the areas of the table not being used I cut out all the parts for the crosses.
The vacuum was sufficient to pull all the bow out of the material.
I am going to add a ball valve to shut off the the back zone when not required. This will make it easier in the future.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1631-x2-jpg
Pieces all cut, I did leave about .005 on the bottom to keep them from flying out.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1632-x2-jpg
The crosses were made in 2 pieces and with an interlocking lap joint they are joined together. Just a spot of glue to keep them together.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1633-x2-jpg
Then a quick jig held in place with the vacuum to add a chamfer around each cross front and back.
The jig held the parts snug enough for this operation. No clamps etc...
Same Jig was later used to hold the parts for the ROS to smooth.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1634-x2-jpg
All finished with a coat of danish oil.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1636-x2-jpg
I have been looking at upgrading to a fein for my vacuum table and when not used for that I will have a quiet shop vac.
So far been just using a normal shop vac. Very noisy and if I read all the specs correctly about 1/2 the vacuum power as a Fein.

By checking the location on each end I can see if the measurements follow the square or the gantry when I flip the square over.

I then used the probing features in the 2010 screenset to probe the same locations on the square. After I was finished it looked like the square was fairly accurate over 20" we'll under .005.
Now I just need to adjust the gantry until the difference follows the square and I should be pretty close with a square gantry.

I had was within .002 in both directions when I flipped the square. .026 vs .028

How are the measurements helping you determine if your gantry is squared?
did you make the holes for the dowels with the CNC?

can you take the time to explain, how thread milling is accomplished ...ie what program generates the g code
    from your post 124

I have used both vcarve pro and HSMxpress to generate gcode.
With milling aluminum it is the speeds and feeds that have to be matched up to your machine. These are not typically that rigid and spindles run too fast. To light cuts, and lubrication is required.

@Steve, I guess what the OP is asking ( an I am wondering also) is if there is a specific tool path operation called thread milling or are we doing a whole pocket with a thead milling tool ?
what does it work, can you elaborate?

You first need to drill a hole, then you use a helical toolpath with a threadmill cutting tool. Some CAM programs can create threadmill toolpaths for you.

Its been awhile since adding to this thread.
Quick update. Machine has been running great. Finally finished up the new spindle mount and also decided to reverse X and Y axis as I am always running machine while facing gantry.
Also replaced the ancient CRT monitor with a lightweight thin LCD. Now I can finish up the keyboard tray and monitor arm.
Finished up lots of small projects, some christmas gifts and some workshop items.
Loving the vacuum table as most of the items below were built using it. The Fein Vacuum provides plenty of holding power and is quiet.

That is some nice work! About that shadow box cor the tools, how long did it take to create the layout?

    Thanks Wizard!
Took about an 1-1/2 hours for the shadow box layout. It took several steps.
    1. Take picture of each tool with scale.
    2. Bring image into iDesign on my iPad.
    3. Use freehand tool and sketch around tool.
    4. Tweak the sketch to cleanup curves and fit tool
    5. Add scale line
    6. Export as PDF
    7. Import vectors into Vcarve Pro.
    8. Scale vectors and complete the layout.

Sounds complicated but actually goes pretty quick.
I tried importing images directly to Vcarve but the vector conversion wasn't that great and required much more work to clean up. Maybe images taken with tools on light box would be better.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm here resisting the need to bundle up and shovel, so I have you to thank for keeping me inside?

Thanks for the heads up, my laptop has broken down so I downloaded this app right away. Seems to be a bit of a learning curve but on the other hand it looks pretty slick as a CAD program goes.

Looks like iDesign needs an edge finding tool for photgraphs.

Working on a few more upgrades today. Finally cut a new set of dust shoe plates. Old set had vent slots for a standard router and a larger hole to fit the router. Also added some shields to protect the ball screws on the side of the machine. Should keep the dust and debris from falling directly on top the screw.
    Cutting new Dust Shoe plates.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1431-l-jpg
    All Finished and mounted
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1434-l-jpg
    New Side Shields in place.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1432-l-jpg
And started on the new keyboard tray.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1435-l-jpg
Goal is to have the keyboard and monitor mounted to machine on a swiveling arm.
Vacuum hold down worked pretty good on this. Made use of most the travels of the machine.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-img_1437-l-jpg
Glued and screwed together. Just need to get it mounted.

    Lots of fun!

Printed a couple vacuum adapters last night.
One to adapt the smaller hose to my dust shoe and the other to adapt the Fein hose to schedule 40 pipe under the table.
Ran out of ABS filament mid-print and switched over to PLA. Hopefully does not break.

Nice dust shoe. Im just about to build one and the design I have in my head is almost identical.
If you dont mind, tell me a couple of things...
How have you mounted the top plate to the spindle - does it clamp on or held by the screw I can see.
Is the lower plate held on by magnets?

The shoe is mounted with a single bolt on the lower spindle mount.
Yes magnets are used to hold the lower brush plate in place.

Did a few tweaks to the keyboard mount. I now have my tool box back and mobile.

Now another project need to replicate this look in my daughters bedroom.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-imageuploadedbytapatalkhd1420256231-007905-jpg
    Quick design in Vcarve.
    Steve's 2x2 CNC Router-imageuploadedbytapatalkhd1420256262-606785-jpg
And a quick half size sample for the bosses approval.

The challenge tomorrow will be cutting the full size version. Will need to output tiles Gcode and use my table dowels to index the material.
