That's going to be one sexy machine Brian.

I could see you successfully making a few of these and selling them. Very nice looking machine.

    Default Powder Coated Pieces!!!

Late on Friday, I picked up the pieces! These first three pictures were taken with my Iphone, and doesn't do the color justice. I used my GF's SLR camera for the other photos...

Here are the pieces as they sat on on Saturday morning... I painted the black pieces with flat BBQ paint and tool blacked the edges that were masked off from the powder coating.

Here is a close-up showing the painted logo as well...

    Beginning of the assembly...

I finished rebuilding the Platform CNC around 3 PM today. I still have a lot to do, but I feel like I am a bit out of the woods since it is operable again. You can see the insert in the background. Kind of like being able to see all of the metal bits for now....

Here you can see Ger21's Mach3 interface. The giant tool path preview window alone is worth the cost of admission...

I have executed the contingency plan. I sent the aluminum out for a waterjet cutting quote, if it can't get done in time I will have to use the thin steel ones. Still have to figure out the spindle clamp...

Rear view, I still have to attach the cable carrier...

Here is a detail of the leg...

View of the rear of the machine. I haven't been able to step back and have this view, because of how close it was to the wall.

    That's it for now!

If I had a machine THAT good looking, I'd be putting it on a pedestal in the lounge too!

That is just a brilliant build, love to see how it performs.

    cheers,
    Ian

    It's a state of mind!

congratulations , you deserve a BAUHAUS award for cnc design . If Marcel Breuer were

sitting in one of his chairs next to it , he would approve of the elegant design .

    sincerely ,

Looks great!! Also I didnt realize how realistic the rendering looked until I looked at these pictures, it would be hard to tell which was real if you put them side by side!

Fabulous machine, absolutely professional and almost too pretty to use

If I may voice one concern it would be the long and slender x-screws with small pitch. I suspect when you want to run high speed they may whip? What is your maximum design rpm?

Thank you very much! I take a lot of inspiration from the mid century modernists like Breuer and Jean Prouvé and that is a great compliment!

Someday I'll get around to modeling my house in 3D...

The leadscrews are 1/2"-10 with 5 starts that move 1/2" per turn.

    Check my math...

Shooting for 200 IPM rapids so with 2 turns per inch on the screw - to go an inch would be 400 RPMs

The longest travel possible (corner to corner) is about 60"

60"/200 IPM = 0.3 minutes or 18 seconds or less at any time for travel

Seems to be well within my limits for now.

This is effectively how fast things were moving in the last video on page 1. Obviously this is a combined axis speed but many times during the video it is almost 100 percent one axis. I am trying to finish the physical build and look forward to pushing the limits soon.

Anything above 200 IPM is gravy for me...

I am also tensioning the lead screws and this should help a bit.

Wish I could do that...sure make it easier to keep it clean.

Your math is right, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't get closer to double that.

Ran it again at 300 IPM... no issues. Jogging combined axis speed around 450 IPM. Might be the 25kHz suggested kernel speed.

Is this setting that much more stable?

Ah, that was not easily recognizable on the picture. If I go with the chart from Roton, the critical speed for a 1/2" dia x 1/2" pitch screw (.345" minor diameter) and assuming 60" free length would be about 450 rpm. With double bearings at both ends or tensioning you will have sufficient margin to run 400 rpm reliably and most of the time the gantry will not be at one end of the table anyway. So, I think it should work as designed.

Funny thing is I built my machine with similar goals and it does what I expected it to do but at the end I was miffed it does not go faster (for different reasons). But 200 ipm will surely do most jobs well.

    Default Aluminum!!!

Not a whole lot of progress for most of this week. A friend contacted me about doing some 3D modeling and milling a logo for some of his custom concrete planters. Since I was hoping to pick up the aluminum on Friday, I spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday working on his logo and milling a few molds on the MDF3790.

    Here are his signs...

This job was able to pay for the aluminum and cutting. Cool how life works out sometimes... At this point, my MDF machine has paid for itself 10 times over.

I picked up the aluminum over lunch on Friday. I had asked them to make sure it doesn't have any major blemishes... I guess this roughly translates to "Please hit everything with a tigerwheel."

Nothing about an hour with a random orbital with some 220 grit couldn't fix...
You can also see my quick redo on the router clamps. One for my Bosch and one for a 80MM body spindle (future, hopefully)

    Closeup view of aluminum...

I also sent out some geometry to be cut out of black vinyl. Couple warning signs and the icons for the machine : )

After tapping about 50 holes this weekend, here is everything installed. It is impossible to take decent photos with the lighting in this room so I'll try to take a couple pics tomorrow.

I am currently drawing mazes and stuff for the machine to draw at Makerfaire.... Getting closer!

    That's it for now!

Default Maker Faire Pics and Video!

Maker Faire Detroit 2012 was a blast! I even met a few CNCZoners! Couple fun things to note is that more than a few people thought I was with a professional company and we were just showcasing the machine. They were surprised to learn that I was a local and had assembled the machine in my den over the last few months Another comment was people thinking it was a large format plotter, luckily Shopbot was nearby so I could explain that it could do everything they were demonstrating. You can hear them cutting in the background of one of the videos...

Here is a great photo of the CNC at Makerfaire featured at Metromix

One of the first things you have to do at Maker Faire is to fill out your name tag...

Solving a mazes with the Playstation controller...

Among other things I printed one of Daniela Hellmich's designs for a wooden marquetry medallion to show that it can do some intricate shapes not just simple mazes...

We had a great time and even took home an Editor's Choice Award to top it off!!!

Now I just have to find a permanent place for it and finally install those limit switches!

That's it for now, I hope to have some actual cutting videos soon!

    Very nice machine.

How did you get an accurate sliding fit on your pen holder? Can you just describe in a little detail how you made that?

    Thanks.

Sure... here is the link to an Instructable I made describing how I did it. The small ring on the end of the pen is only unnecessary if you want the assembly to stay together when it is not in the machine..

A work of art, thanks for sharing. I am redoing the table for my MDF table today....you have me thinking that I should have started over with metal, lol. Well done!

Wish I had known that there was such an event in Detroit this weekend! I would have driven over, I live north of GR.
