My experience with masking tape wasn't good. It is made of paper, (natch), and the edges of the cut get fuzzy. The adhesive is also a bit weak and there's slippage around the cut, adding to the mess. I haven't tried contact paper, but it would seem to address both of those issues. (it's not made of paper, the name is just a holdover from the past).

I tried contact paper on this one to see how it worked, cut my sanding down a ton. I painted the cuts with black spray paint, danish oil finish.

Still wet in the picture, flash made it shiny.

I tried the painters tape, the results were not good. I picked up some contact paper but haven't had the time to try it yet. too busy trying to finish up my second router.

Thanks for the headphone stand dxf r00t4rd3d! Gave me a good first project for my first cnc. Just cut it out of mdf to test things out, will be slicing up some baltic birch for the one that will sit on my desk. (After some calibration that is...)

Neat stuff in this thread. I saw you were using LinuxCNC but what CAD/CAM programs are you using? VCarve, Aspire?
I currently use VCarve and was thinking about Aspire but that is a huge jump in price and I don't know if I can justify it yet.

I have a small question, where did you get your CNC Electronics part such as the stepper drivers, motors, power, jogging keyboard. Thanks a lot. Btw, I'm planning to build a 2' x 4' base on your model.

I got everything from ebay basically.

Also to anyone who might follow this thread, I had to move to an apartment with no garage or setup place. Hopefully that changes in the near future and I am able to start making stuff and posting back here on a regular basis.

I bought most of my stuff from ebay as well. Then I replaced most of it. the chinese motors I purchased from longs motors ended up having a old ball shaft size. I was expecting 1/4" and ended up with 5/16". Replaced all my motors with automationtechnologiesinc.com and never looked back. Used a 7.3a 48V switching supply but found that not quite enough and purchased a 50v 10amp linear power supply instead. I made hall effect limit switches from some plans on cnczone, but eventually replaced them with proximity sensors from china. pay attention to the size of the sensor however. As there are a few different sizes. My G540 has worked flawlessly as well as the SuperPID I had before I replaced my router with a chinese spindle. r00t4rd3d, you need to replace your's. You could then run your machine in your apartment. Dust might be an issue though

I didn't know you had stopped. Sucks when real life interferes in our hobbies though.

Where did the bearing blocks that support your lead screws come from?

After being stuck in ****ty living conditions for almost 4 years and getting my hopes up a few times thinking I would have a place to set up shop I finally have a spot to cut without worry.
