Still not all the answers I was seeking, but a good start of reading what others are using.

My goal was to find a CMM type device that would go in the spindle of my VMC and allow the plotting of a transmission. However, the transmission will not fit inside my VMC doors, and I would have to take the transmission apart to get the bolt hole facing in there.

So, then the scanning of the facing would be nice with the laser and webcam deal.

It appears that most are using plain webcam type camera's.

Alot of smart people out there making some really cool stuff.
