    Probing newbie...

im looking at getting a CNC router. In doing so, im thinking Mach3, but im looking for a method of capturing our hand carved product and digitizing it. so that it can be replicated without Years of training and experience at carving to spec.
Since its wood, then id be happy with an accuracy of 0.5mm i suppose.

I think a probe would be the cost effective method. What do you guys think/ recomend...

    Where should i start looking.

A probe would be the best for you.
do you have much use for one or a "one-time" use?

That relates to using a scanning service of doing it yourself.

we have 65+ items that we need to work on, plus other bits and peices that would help us. so having our own probe would help.

A probe mounted on a CNC machine is the cheapest way to do this, but it's very slow and not very accurate. A laser scanner would be much quicker and would do a better job, but it's more expensive. I'd suggest trying the probe method first, and if it doesn't do the job for you, looking into laser heads that you can mount on your machine.

This project appears to be well suited for a microscribe arm for obtaining the point data. (it will be much more productive as Andrew says)

Do you have access to one? and have personnel to do the point generation and subsequent conversion to the CAD model?
