Has anyone tried scanning the engine bay of a car to get an accurate representation of space constraints in that area? I'm trying to find something affordable (either diy or purchase) that is preferably handheld so I can scan this bay from different angles for better accuracy. It doesn't have to be more accurate than 1mm precision, but any insight from you experienced gurus would be very helpful to me since I don't how else to do this.

bostosh, are you referring to the NextEngine 3D scanner? 3K is above my student budget. I was thinking of trying one of those DIY 3D scanners that use a webcam and a laser, but they all require a folded background board with coordinate dots/shapes. Has anyone tried using one of these DIY 3D Laser scanners without the background, but used some kind of reflective tape on the objects they were scanning for accurate point clouds?

Khalid, you provide a wonderful service for the community! I would send you things, but being in different country makes it difficult, plus I cannot send an entire car engine bay lol...only if I could... ![]() Do you have any tutorials of how you are 3D laser scanning without a background? I noticed you put some kind of powder on that turbo impeller. Does any kind of tape exist that would also reflect correctly to produce a 3D point-cloud from the laser scan? Thanks in advance!
