stamping transformer laminations

hello all,

this is my first post, thanks for keeping up this great forum!

i´m looking for information to stamp my own transformer laminations from 0,35mm strips. i bought a book about tool making and read about essentials, so now i can say which press, that i need a clearance of 0,02mm, which steel to use etc.
now i´m looking for more information on stamping transformer laminations, examples of how it´s done, pics and descriptions from finished tools.

i will come up with more detailed information regarding my own needs soon, just wanted to check if people are around with knowledge/experience in this topic.

best regards,
-max

As best as I can remember, the stamping was done in a 4 post Henry and Wright press. The dies themselves were 4 post also. Extreme rigidity was important. I'm going back 40 years to recall this. I'm assuming that you are referring to E and I laminations.

hi gene,

thanks for your reply - yes, just like EI laminations, ur UI in my case
here is the measurement:
it would be possible to stamp them scrapless, since one I fits inside 2 U´s.

hi i m hardeep from india, about 4 years back i studied material scienece and crystallography, as much i recall is transformers r made with special steel they have magnetic hysterisis[[ sorry if spellings wrong]] characteristics such that hysterisis losses r small, they r may be steels with some extra silicon, they r also cold worked to have some preferred orientation of crystalls,,
for making stampings.... a book or online knowledge cant make u a die maker it takes lot , there r many die steels, some times they use high carbon , high chromium steels or some use en-31 steels[[ i dont know american equivalent]] they r properly hardenend n heat treated,, u even dont know what exactly to ask ,, u should have mentioned size of stampings
that is all i knew hope it will be helpfull

hardeep,

thanks for your post.
i´m aware about the different magnetics, silicone steels corn oriented hysteresis etc. i already purchased the material i need (and have been working with off-the-shelf laminations to know about typical magnetic properties)

i dont nescessarily do my own stamping die - but i would like to know how it´s done, i could work on proper design and drawings for a toolmaker.
however i´m open to suggestions of someone who could make this die for me.
the size for the stampings is shown in the last post.
i want to make 10-50.000 pcs., so a 1.2379 - X153CrMoV12 / X155CrVMo12-1 cold working tool steel properly treated should be fine for my needs.
