y axis for spindle control ?

Has anyone ever used a linear axis for rotary spindle control. I have a deskcnc 1st gen. controler on my Hardinge lathe conversion. The a axis is already being used for a rotary tool changer. The spindle motor is a dc servo with 500 count encoder.

I know I will likely have to buy 2nd gen. card, but just in case.

Ok then! Has anyone used Deskcnc 2nd generation card to control spindle speed and direction on a dc motor spindle with encoder feedback, if so how well does it work and how easy is it to set up please?
