Hello All: I'm planning on upgrading the control hardware on my Emco machines (F1 mill and lathe) to allow for PC-based programming. I'm on a budget, and I believe I've narrowed the field down to two options. The DeskCNC 2nd Gen and the HobbyCNC Pro. The HobbyCNC is a kit that must be soldered, but it costs only half as much as the DeskCNC. It also seems to have a larger user base, at least based on this site. Perhaps the deciding factor, and one I didn't find on DeskCNC's site, is whether their board will work with BobCAD. Does anyone know? All other info and/or recommendations are welcome. Thanks! //Edward |

| DeskCnc is a cam software and controller package (generates your your step pulses externally instead of through your parallel port). It uses the serial port. It is supposed to generate higher pulse rates and cleaner pulses. You will still require a step and direction driver board to drive your stepper or servo motors. The HobbyCnc board will probably work with it. I know Gecko's work great with it. The HobbyCnc board will run directly off the parallel port without a controller but will require software such as Mach2 to run your machine. Bobcad is a cad/cam package and will generate the g-code and will work with either option. You do not have to have it to run your machine. Hope this helps. Bert |
