Those machine can cut most materials the machine is a copy of a design what's been around for years it's stronger that some of the hobby machines out there, it's not hard to upgrade it to better rails and ball screws or controller.

You're doing it the correct way try this try that, find what works.

Ian have you cut anything yet

Hi Dan....no......still doing the learning curve which is why I bought it in the first place.....when I have something to make I'll be ready to go the distance without a calamity in the process......I think I said that a dozen times so far........oh well, being retired means I can do what I want without having to satisfy a schedule not of my own making.

Actually, I do have a number of projects that I can put the mill to good use on, but I also have a huge backlog of home reno projects that keep me busty as well.,,,,,,installing an 8 camera CCTV system is my current project.

I was quite surprised that the 3040 models can do such good work.

This is the 3040 aluminium moving gantry CNC router listed on EBAY isn't it?....... or is the 3040 title just an indication of the work envelope....if so what model is the one in this thread?

BTW....there is a 3040 model on EBAY that lists 1204 ballscrews on all axes....priced at A$1250 approx. and with the 400 Watt motor......that's up from approx. A$850 for the Acme thread screw model.
    Ian.

3040 is just a name about a few dozen use, just like there are a few different black box controllers out there

Hi Dan and Ian, the CNC series 3020 3040 an 6040 i think relate to the machine bed size, the z-dq t-d ect relate to stepper motors/ spindle power.
Ian, a few tips on milling metals and PCB's, with metals, adjust the feed rate, depth of cut and spindle speed for minimum vibration, aim for a hissing noise from the milling bit.
PCB's don't assume the machine bed is flat and level, ( There NOT ) Make a bolt on ali plate and mill out a square pocket 1mm deep find the high point first and mill down from that point, the one i made, the distortion of the bed and the Ali plate was over 1 mm, in the pic the outer square was milled at the same depth in the top left corner it skipped off. I use 1 mm thick, 1 once copper board, had i not made the plate it would not of touched the pcb in some places but cut all the way through in others. I found thin double sided sticky tape works best to hold the PCB to the plate bed, press it firmly down will take out any bow in the board, But watch out for you drilling depth or you will drill into the bed like i did once. Well, there ain't a few dozen 3040's from different manufacture on EBAY....a couple of different sellers yes, but possibly from the same factory to the same design, with a few variations in the spindle and screws etc,

I don't think many (any) of the non EBAY manufacturers bother with the smaller gantry models, so it's a fair bet to assume the one being mentioned here is the EBAY common 3040 model with Acme screws and 400 watt brushed motor.

The fact that you get elliptical holes from Acme screw backlash is a real need to go to the more expensive ball screw model......it'll cost you more in the long run to do an after market refit otherwise, but even then it would be a worthwhile project.

BTW....there's a 600 watt motor too being offered on EBAY....would the frame stand the extra force?

So, now the show is on the road, thanks for the expose on the 3040, seems like a pretty handy machine.
    Ian.
