Run away IMO. Especially with a Philips control. Good luck with parts and service, at least in the US. I know Mori Seiki is now handling parts and service here, but not one of the service guys will know that thing.
so, i have had some big changes in my shop lately. people leaving, machines leaving, new work coming in, walls coming down.
so im looking for a nice used machining centre with a tool changer and at least 30x16 travel that doesnt cost alot. im happy to clean up and service a beat up machine, but i dont want anything that needs expensive parts to make run.
so ive found a 1993 MH800c listed in canada. its cheap, "running", has all the features i want, plus a rotary table and auto swivel head. i know these machines have a reputation for being really nice, so i think this would do me well.
does anyone have any opinions on these? specifically things that might be an expensive problem on a used machine? also any info on the features it should have would be appreciated - like rigid tapping for example. it has a philips control as well, which i dont know anything about (whether they are reliable or not).
thanks.

haha. well, youll need to be a little more specific to get me to run. im a short drive to the DMG canada service and sales headquarters, and the guys there have seemed knowledgable.
EVERY out of production used machine is going to be a ***** for service and oem parts. thats a given to me. i can do most of it on my own.
the phillips control is on my list of worries though. ive read the older ones were not too hot. this is a slightly newer one, so maybe its more usable, maybe not. im not opposed to refitting a different control though provided the stock one "works" in the beginning.
No, not every machine. I can order parts for a 1981 SL1 mori and bet they have parts in stock in dallas. The last DMG we needed a gear for the X axis, the thrust bearings actually used the face of this gear for pre-load. Took 6 months to get one. Needed a board from them for the control, think it was a power supply board. No dice period on that one. All but one of those things is now gone, and we had at least 10 of them at one time. A retrofit on the other hand would probably make things a lot better. I know Don Setner did retrofits on the deckels, not sure about the Mahos.
Did you decide to buy this machine?
