    Need Examples of Cylindrical Interpolation

    I have a Puma 700 LM w/ Fanuc 18ti. & Live Tool.

1)I have attached a picture of the part that I need to work on. Would you suggest using cylindrical interpolation G07.1 to put the groove and the dimples in on the base area in middle? I have a problem right now with the drawing I recieved because I was sent a parasolid file(*x_t) and I can't open it with Solidworks or Surfcam to get any geometry off these areas or even do any toolpathing. Basically you're looking at a 1/2" long trapezoid with 1/4radius fillets in corners. The diameter from each dimple (180 deg. apart not shown ) is 1.87 and top turn diameter of shaft is 2 1/16". So that dimple is about .100 deep per side.

Anyways I was thinking of taking a 1/4" ball endmill and cylindrical interpolating around the part and moving in to form the trapezoidal dimple somehow. Any examples of doing something similar?

2)Also I'm looking for an example of something that was engraved on the cylinder as far as a serial number about 1/8" height? I need to do the serial number on the end of this thing as well?

    Appreciate any help and advice

    Thanks,

    soli model

It looks to me that you are going to have to get the solid model somehow. Can't you get an igs file? The through slot is also contoured along with what you call the dimples.

Does your surfcam have c-axis 3-d contouring.

Thanks for what you posted. That was perfect. Very good explanation and will help.

As far as Surfcam. It is Velocity 3 version. It does offer Mill/Turn function which I have not used yet. I will try to get it in an *.igs file to see if I can get a wire frame into Surfcam. Then I can play around to try and toolpath, then try to post and see what it looks like.

I had an example from Peter Smid's 3rd edition CNC Programming Handbook. It is a similar path to what I would like to do with the exception of the trapezoidal area. I was planning on just running a macro loop with stepover and contour this trapezoidal dimple area out with 1/4 ball em. I could drop the ball with minimal stepover and create the 1/4" fillet walls and approx. 30 degree angle. I can calculate all this out but needed to see how the G07.1 worked.
Also is there a way to arc move around the drilled whole? I was thinking about doing it similar to a mill using G18/G19 but don't know if I can do that? I am not even sure if I can use a Y-Axis on my machine. I believe so because i can set up blocks G54-G59 with a Y-Axis. That is why I am looking for advice and similar examples and maybe I can adapt. I figure things out pretting quickly.
