Daewoo v Haas Lathes....Advise please

I have a plastics machining business and we are looking to get our first CNC lathe. We have narrowed it down to a Daewoo Lynx 220 or a Haas SL20 Big Bore. Is anyone familiar with both machines, if so do you have a preference?

The conversational control on the Haas is appealling because I have only used cnc mills. Should make the programming much easier. Is it as good as Haas proclaim or is it limited.

If anyone has advise on which machine they would choose and why then I would love to hear your reasoning.

Thanks

Quickers,

I formerly worked for a Haas distributor (and now a Doosan distributor), and installed and serviced quite a few of their SL lathes. There were several things I didn't like about them:

1. The X-axis was counterbalanced by a coil spring, which had a tendancy to break where it was anchored to the saddle bracket. This could cause real problems if the machine went into E-Stop as the X-axis would just coast down until it bottomed out or hit something.

2. The turret unclamp was done by an air cylinder which rotated a plate with three ramped cam grooves. It used 3 hardened steel balls that rode in these grooves to lift the turret off the curvic coupling. These were a constant source of headaches.

Check for posts by PBMW about his problems with the Haas lathe and his subsequent purchase of a Lynx. I believe he's happy with the move to Doosan.

Good luck.

I am indeed happy with my Doosan. I don't want to start a Haas bashing thing. The Haas was a great bang for the buck.
Lets talk about the differences...
Both have the same size chuck. (I have to talk about my Daewoo and my SL10 Haas. not an SL20. I don't own an SL 20, so I don't know...)
The swing le slightly larger on the Daewoo. The length of cut is slightly larger on my SL10. The Haas does not have a tail stock. The T/S offered by Haas is a joke. Seriously. My Daewoo came stock with one. and it's accurate and inline with the spindle. Go figure...
The SL10 uses 3/4" tooling vs the 1" tooling on the Daewoo.
Both machines have a tool probe. I have had to recalibrate the Haas probe four times. Never had to touch the Daewoo probe.
There are some things I like about the Haas control over the Fanuc but Visual Quick Code ain't one of em. I can see zero value in using a $60k machine for a calculator. I do all my programming off line using Mastercam X2. I own two seats. Mill level three and Lathe 1. I use MCU to verify all code.
The Haas will tap faster than the Fanuc. But the Haas has way less horsepower. The Haas is rated at 15hp and the Daewoo is rated at 20hp. But the difference is bigger than that. Haas rates their motors at 200% loat for something like 30 seconds. The Daewoo is rated at 20hp for 30 min. I just went to the Haas site and they say MAX power is 15hp.
No other explaination of rating.
I run the same parts on both machines. Same program...the Daewoo runs about 25% faster. it has 1430ipm rapids vs I think 7 or 800 for the Haas.
The Daewoo cuts 304 and 316 ss 3" dia at .150 doc at .01 per rev. The Haas will not do that.
But, don't get me wrong here. I've made a lot of money with my Haas. And it got me into the turning business. And I'll repeat. I am compareing a Daewoo to an SL10 Haas, not the SL20 that you are talking about. You may also want to know that with most of the big bore options comes a reduction in spindle speed as teh head stock bearings are much larger and thus must be limited in speed in order to control heat. My Daewoo and my Haas have comperable spindle bores (1 3/4 inch I believe)
But the bigest issue for me was service. I would have considered another Haas, because I DO like the control...but the service was abismal and even after a documented NIGHTMARE with my dealer, the factory really didn't care a whit if my machine ran or not. And in the end, that is what drove me to buy a Daewoo. The overall quality of the machine is FAR superior to the Haas.
And the owner of the dealer that I bought my Daewoo through, The OWNER mind you, came out to fix my Haas last Thanksgiving day. Because the Haas dealer couldn't care less and had already screwed it up. That earned both my respect and my business.

Buy A Daewoo

I Agree With Dcoupar And Pbmw! Buy The Daewoo. My Company Has 3 Daewoo Lathes And Had Have Great Luck With Them, the Oldest Is 10 Years Old And The Newest Is 4 Years Old And They All Get Run Hard With Minimum Problems. We Recently Bought A Haas Sl-30 Because Of A Good Deal We Got From All The Haas Mills We Bought, what A Mistake On All Counts.the Lathe Controller Sucks!! Does Not Compare To A Fanuc And The Gearbox Failed After One Day .machine Has No Power At All Compared To The Daewoos.my Lynx 200a Has More Cutting Torque Than The Haas Sl-30 And It Less Than Half The Size!!!!!

Thankyou to everyone who took the time to respond to my question. I have taken everything mentioned into consideration and I really appreciate the unbiased views provided in your posts.

We have decided to go with the Doosan Lynx 220 and judging by your posts I am confident we have made the correct decision. Thanks again

You'll like it. It's one heck of a machine.
When I bought mine, there was a deal where I got the parts catcher, tailstock, probe, tramp skimmer included in the base price. Then I bought a High Pressure pump and conveyer.

Found this one back east for sale,
DAEWOO PUMA 6HS CNC TURNING CENTER / LATHE also includes a Bar feeder and some tool holders.
Other than the Model Number, anything I should know about this type of machine.
PBMW, who is the local dealer in our area?
After getting my feet wet with my TM-1, looking for a lathe now and found this one.
Sorry for the limited info on the lathe, just looking for a possable history on this type of machine.

Local dealer in OR/WA is CNC Machine Services in Snohomish. I'm not familiar with the 6HS, but all of the new machines we've sold/installed have looked to be very solid. I toured the factory last year and was very impressed by what I saw.

I do not have a lot of Experiance with a CNC lathe, and really do not need a money pit if at all possable.
Thanks for your time,

As noted above. CNC Sales in Snohomish is the Daewoo dealer. Mark Harris is outstanding. I can not speak more highly of a machine dealer than Mark.
No kidding.
