Not a Happy Camper or Daewoo Lathe Owner. Should have bought the Mori

We have 3 Daewoo lathes, 2500 LSY (new 8/2006) / 2500 SY (bought used 11/06 was new in 2004) / 2000SY (bought new 3/07). Last year there was a thread on comparisons between Daewoo and Mori Seiki lathes. Consensus was Mori Seiki was more expensive, but the Daewoo's were pretty good units. My experience has been that I could have paid for the Mori Seiki's with all the downtime and service calls I have had.

The used unit was bought from a dealer, it had less than 300 hours on the unit, and looked like it had never been run. Within 2 weeks we started having problems. Never got more than a week of running before it would go down. One problem after another, switches, controllers, ect. I figured that's what I get for buying a used machine.

Now we are starting to have the same problem with the LSY, and it is less than a year old. The problems are being fixed on warranty, but the down time is killing me. Funny how the banks still want their payments even if the machine is not running.

I am afraid of what will happen to the 2 new machines by the time they are 2 years old.

I need to buy 3 more lathes by years end to expand on a product line. I think I will pay the extra dollars and get a Mori. What are your thoughts.

Angry update

We are now passing 72 hours of lost production THIS WEEK on the 10 month old 2500 LSY. And, it is the second time it has crapped out in the last 30 days.

We are also seeing a problem we have experienced in the past with Daewoo. Our service rep. came in on Tuesday, worked for a couple of hours and said it was a Fanuc problem. Since it is a warranty issue, the Fanuc service rep. has to come in and confirm the problem. He gets here about 1 PM the next day. Confirms the problem and orders parts. Says he won't be back until 3PM the following day. This is BULL****.

I know a lot of you who read this are concerned with programming and chip making, but I thought I would share my frustration with any decision makers out there, who have to take the heat when machines are NOT producing.

Now going over 100 hours of downtime. Now Fanuc says it's a Daewoo problem. I wouldn't be so mad if this was our first or even second breakdown. But it is multiple breakdowns on multiple machines over an extended period. I will NEVER buy a Daewoo machine again. Mori Seiki has offered to take one of the machines off the floor and replace it, to show us the reliability differences. Will I do it, in a New York minute. I can't get enough uptime on these 3 lathes to pay for the lease, much less the overhead and payroll.

Sorry to hear about all your trouble, John. I've heard of a lot of issues with Daewoo, mostly turrets on the lathes and spindles on the mills. They may be great for a job shop, but not in a production envirionment doing the type of work that you do. If the new Mori's are anything like the old ones you won't have any trouble. Nakamura - Tome is another good one for multi-turret, multi axis machines. Good luck..

Now it is the cable and not the amplifier. The cable in question is part of a larger cable bundle, so they want to "jerry rig" a seperate cable path, install a new conduit and drill the control cabinet to hook the cable directly to the Fanuc Amplifier.

This machine is 10 months old.

Our 2 year old machine (bought used 11/07) is seeing multiple problems with hydraulic and proximity switches. It appears that Daewoo trys to put in the cheapest piece of crap switches and wiring to increase profit margin. We have replaced one switch in the 2 year old unit 2 times in the last 90 days. $150.00 for the switch each time. We tried to find a better quality switch to replace the piece of crap switch used by Daewoo, but could not find one. To their credit, our local Daewoo distributor has been hunting better quality switches to upgrade the system. This tells me, that they know it's a problem.

According to our distributor Daewoo Doosan is now the worlds largest manufacturer of CNC lathes. They might have built some decent machines in the past to build up business, but the stuff they are putting out now is not worth sh*t.

Wow....
I have a 2006 220a Lynx that I run 16 hours a day seven days a week. I bought it last November. Zero issues.
I wonder if this is model specific?

I've seen Daewoos with Fanuc controls and Daewoos with Mitsubishi controls. Much of the problems with Daewoos can be traced to the Fanuc electronics.

I programmed, setup and ran a Puma 350 with a Meldas control for 8 years and the only problem we had was once the machine locked in low gear. The tech was there 20 minutes, replaced a switch [relay?] and we were happy campers again.

Also, Mitsubishi software addons are standard [free]. The same ones are options on a Fanuc.

What I don't like about Daewoo is that it's often two weeks before a tech shows.

If you are thinking about replacing the Deawoos, try looking into Hwacheons. In my opinion, they are the #1 Korean CNC company. They are nearly as good as Okumas and Moris, but with a slightly less price tag. But they are more expensive than Deawoos, Hyundias.
In our shop, we are %50 Hwacheons and %50 Moris. They all serve very well.

John,

Buy the Mori. As time goes buy and funds permit replace the other machines with Mori's and sell the Daewoo's to the highest bidder.

Personally I never liked Daewoos because of all the problems. Mori's on the other hand might cost more, but there is a good reason for the price: Quality!!!

Cheers!!!!!

daewoo problems

hey lets face it I could go out and find 100 guys that hate mori, or fadal ,etc...

if there were one machine that was perfect everyone would own one,

we have 4 Daewoos one is a 240 msb runs unattended nights and weekends,

I just bought a new 30 x 16 mill. (Daewoo) Compared to Haas the Daewoo is built much better although Haas has a better control,,

11300 lbs verses 8000 says alot,,, if you look at sales Daewoo is #3

to me service is the key (maybe that is alot of your problem)

We have some Fadals and everytime I have a service guy come out (fadal trained ) I have to tell him how to fix it.

I am not sticking up for Daewoo but so far so good

Doug
