Should I pursue buying this Lynx 200?

    Hi:

I'm looking at a 2001 Daewoo Lynx with a bar feeder with a relay that needs changing. Anyone want to convey their expertise on this model/had any experience with this machine?'

The seller is looking for Best Offer with a listing of around 20K. The year is 2001. I can't see it run as it's not set up. Does it sound like it's worth pursuing? I understand that this is so non-specific a question and that it's impossible to be too exact with the limited info I have here.

Not to put too fine a point on it; but the seller says there's a tech report stating that x backlash is .00015, Z is .00021 and squareness of the turret is .0003 with center of chuck to turret @.0002 FWIW. Seller will forward the report to me. Seller also claims they saw it running when taken out of service. The machine looks clean and I can travel with a good friend to look at it.

What is a reasonable offer with it not running? I've looked at some of the posts for this particular lathe and it seems to have reasonable reliability yes? In general what's the reputation for Daewoo lathes on a rating scale of 1 to 5 with one being low and 5 being high? I've looked at postings for Daewoo VMCs and if what I've read generalizes it's a decent make.

Hope someone has something to send my way in terms of help and information.

    Thanks

    Jon

If it works sounds like a good buy at that price.

    What controller is it?
Daewoo used Mitsubishi controls with machines around that era. Which are fairly bullet proof and support is excellent from Mits.
Sometimes you have to take a diagnosed pre-sale problem with a pinch of salt.
The bar feeder with a relay that needs changing may be a red herring for problem that someone has not been able to fix?
    Or me just being cynical.

I agree with Al. Buying a machine without being able to inspect it under power is a risky venture.

Can you disconnect the bar feeder and check the machine out otherwise? If they can tell you which relay is fried, buy one and swap the old one out for your test. Sometimes fried relays are a symptom of a worse problem. They're cheap enough that you shouldn't hesitate to buy a replacement for a machine so you can inspect before buying.

Putting a machine under power isn't all that much trouble. I wouldn't recommend buying a machine without being able to inspect it under power. Don't sweat the turret being slightly out of square unless it has some major crash damage. Their alignment is adjustable. Mechanical backlash can be hidden with proper parameter settings. There are parameters for backlash which will overdrive the motors a few encoder steps so your machine will have no apparent backlash if you move from coordinate to coordinate.

If you're not familiar with this particular machine, I have had good luck hiring a Daewoo tech in the vicinity of wherever I buy machinery to help me with inspection. I did that with the first machine I bought and I learned a lot.

2001 is a pretty recent build. I'm running a '96 Puma acquired used and I have been quite happy with it. Holds tolerances well and hasn't required very much maintenance. It's old enough that some of the pneumatic lines are starting to pop, but they're easy to replace.
