Puma 12L, al-17 on rear keypad

This code has been coming for some time now, preventing a ready condition. The repair guy hasn't figured it out so to prevent the down time over waiting for it to warm up and run, we've been leaving the main power on. Well, over the holiday weekend we turned it off for the week it would be down.
That was a mistake. 8 days on now and it wont accept the 4 button simultaneous push to reset it we've been doing.
Anyone have a direction this al-17 points to that we can go? I was told its an unspecified code. Help?

Are you referring to the spindle drive unit alarm AL-17? If so, AL-17 means problem with NVRAM(non-volatile memory) chip on the spindle board. Please contact fanuc america 18883268287 for a procedure on how to initialize it.

I believe that's what it is. We reset the parameters in the back with instructions, again, and it's operational again.
But, what would be continually causing the code to show on that display? Is it a certain chip or board that is the culprit? It shows every time main power is turned off and back on. Using the simultaneous 4 button push brings all "0"'s on the display and the lathe to a machine ready state. Loren
