We are using the Makino Hyper5 for cutting molds and dies, and have recently noticed a BIG problem when cutting with Ballnose cutters ! Ballnose cutters are cutting 0.035mm to deep ! It doesnt matter what the diameter of the cutter is its always 0.035mm to deep, we have checked the programs and all looks fine, we even ran a program for a ballnose using an endmill and it cut perfectly to depth. Has anyone seen or heard of this problem ? Is it a problem with the Makino itself ? All endmill programs run and cut to tolerance perfectly. Cutters from 6mm to 0.4mm diametre with an R0.1 cut perfectly.. TIA |

| Well - Makino qustion shouldn't be asked in Industrial Hobbies thread. It sounds to me like your tool setter probe position is out of whack. Try manually zeroing your Z offset to verify.

| Thankyou for your reply ! My apologise for posting in the wrong section. If the Z setting probe was "out of whack" would this not cause endmills to over cut by 0.035mm too ? I believe it has something to do with the probe !! but for it to work with all but one type of cutter is puzzling !! |

| If your XY position for the probe is out say 1/8" then it will be "riding up' the radius of the ball mill whereas it is still seeing the "flat" of the flatmill.
