Hi there I am retrofitting a round column cnc mill. I have a harbor freight mill which I have converted to Dc drive for the head and 3 servo CMC motors (us digital decoders),gecko 320 motor controllers for the x,y, and z axis. I have been learning how to use mastercam x4. The motors and power supply are 80 volts. The machine has been converted to ballscrews c7 with double preloaded nuts. No what I am stuck with, is how to do the breakout board so that I can use mastercamx4 on the machine and also for the board to be either rs232 or usb. I was told by a company (who made the retrofit controller for my mini mill) that the db25 breakout controllers are dinosaurs and that the best machines are controlled by rs232 or usb cards. How do I either get the mastercam x4 to recognize my custom machine or do I merely download the mach 3 files and have it run it as mach 3. Also what would he best breakout board chices be as I am having problems finding breakout boards for servo motors. Do you guys have any suggestions.
Mastercam is a a CAD/CAM program which will produce a CNC part program, you need a CNC controller to run the machine, starting with Mach3 and above.
It sounds as though you already have motor and drives, if they are step/dir then you are committed to this type of controller.
