    UNSTABLE Z-AXIS

LATELY I HAVE BEEN NOTICING A HEAVY FRONT EDGE OF CUT WHEN FACING OVER LARGE RUNS OF X SIMILAR TO AN ADJUSTABLE HEAD OF A KNEE MILL BEING OUT OF ADJUSTMENT. BUT SINCE I HAVE NO ADJUSTMENT ON MY HEAD MYSELF AND THE GENTS AT MILLTRONICS WERE ASSUMING SOME KIND OF WEAR ON THE GIB. BUT ITS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVLY WORSE STARTING OUT AT BARELY NEGLEGIBLE TO SOMEWHERE AROUND 5 THOU. (.005) SO TODAY IM RUNNING A FACING PROGRAM ON A LARGE FLAT PANEL AND WATCHING THE BALL SCREW AND IT IS EVER SO FAINTLY JUMPING IN ROTATION. SO WHEN I PUSH UP ON THE QUILL I FEEL THE SERVO TRY TO COMPENSATE KINDA TWITCHY. AND WHEN RUNNING THE FACE PROGRAM ALSO KINDA TWICHY. THERE IS A DULL WHINE COMING FROM THE SERVO CARDS. THE WHOLE TIME I HAVE HAD THE MILL I ASSUMED THIS IS NORMAL. BUT AS I LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY THE TWITCH OF THE BALL SCREW CHANGES THE SOUND OF THE WHINE. I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS ONLY THE Z CARD MAKING THE SOUND OR IF ITS COMING FROM ALL EQUALLY BUT ONLY THE Z IS CHANGING THE SOUND WITH THE TWITCH. THESE ARE SERVO DYNAMICS SD1525-10 CARDS AND HAVE ADJUSTMENT POTS AVAILABLE. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF THIS IS SOMTHING I CAN "TUNE IN"

sounds like you need to rebuild that axis

does it have box ways ? , if so you may get away with just resurfacing the back plates , that's where most of the wear happens

NO THE AXIS MECHANICALLY IS FINE I WAS TRYING TO GIVE A BRIEF HISTORY ON WHAT I THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS. I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PART ABOUT THINKING THE GIB WAS WORN OUT OF MY DESCRIPTION. THE PROBLEM IS ALL ELCTRONIC/OR HAVING TO DO WITH THE SERVO OR THE AMPLIFIER. THEIR IS A TWITCHING OR BACK AND FORTH ROTATING HAPPENING WITH THE Z BALL SCREW.

Please turn off your caps lock. It makes for difficult reading, and it's the internet equivelant of shouting at somebody.

    Thanks,
    Mark
