Allen Bradley plc 500

I was told I could connect my handheld terminal to the 24 slot hub that runs cat 5 thoughout the house. I have wired it direct, crossover and rollover, but the screen stays blank. If I bypass the hub it works ?.
Second question.
I have a 502 processor and at a later date will replace it with a 504 that I purchased on Ebay. Once I mastered the programming. As I cannot use the handheld with this prossessor How do I go about obtaining the softwear to run it on windows. I have the interface so far. This is my toy so cost is a concern.
Thank you. Phil (Hope BC).

Neither of these processors will work on ethernet right out of the box. You will have to go with a 5/05 for ethernet use. For software we use AB. It is quite expensive and is labeled RSLogix500. It will also work with the micrologic processor. You will also have to have a cable which is a serial link. If you use the 5/05 you will still need to communicate serially to add the IP address. Once it is in you can go ethernet. These are good processors and most last for years. Unfortunately AB is unsympathetic to us hobbiest when it comes to software since they are designed for industrial use. The software comes on cd but is unusable until the key is downloaded from a floppy. You can run without downloading but you will have to insert the floppy each time you boot up. I believe AB does make a ethernet card which will work with the 5/04 but I have not used it. I would suggest you contact your local AB dealer. Most of them have a service tech that can help.

Buy me a Beer?

There are programs that will make back up copies of the key floppy. like COPYQM, DOS copy will not work.
Of course this is for archive only and is Illegal to use more than one.

BTW I have never understood why PLC companies sell their software for exhorbitant prices, you cannot use it anywhere else, and if they offer it free or a modest price, it is an incentive to buy/use their PLC products.

Buy an entire controller, the I/O cards, the software to program it with, and the standard serial cable for less than the price of RSLogix (at least when I bought it). www.ezautomation.net

Ethernet adds $99 more to the price on any model.

Since I started using EZ products, I haven't even bothered to buy any more AB stuff off ebay, let alone paying list prices for any of it.

I've used both extensively.

Today on ebay a used SLC5/05 processor alone, without rack, power supply, I/O, software, or proprietary interface cables is listed at $1375 starting price.

From EZautomation:
Processor base with 64K memory, 64 I/O capacity, two serial ports, and ethernet .................................. $287
Programming software ............... $49
Cable ........................................$20 (or buy anywhere)
Mix-n-match 32 120vac I/O ........ $116 (4 x $29)
Throw in some analog .................$99 (4 in + 4 out)

Add a touchscreen interface ........... $534 (6" monochrome)
Touchscreen Program ......................$99
Another cable .................................$20

Manuals ..........................................$0
Tech Support ..................................$0 (talk to a human within minutes, no charge!)
Training (not needed!)......................$0
Software upgrades/bugfixes .............$0

Total .............................................. $1224 complete ($571 without touchscreen)

Thanks for the info, I like my toy to much to give up. At the moment its working as my house alarm, but later to control outside lighting, watering plants and maybe a water show with music !. Phil
