Connection between UC232A and Haas VF CNC machine

I am on a CNC out-of-school course. I have found cncsimulator to practice things.

Our teacher decided as graduation, we will have the teacher's Haas VF (I think, I'll have to note the exact model tomorrow) to carve ourselves our self-designed (and self-programmed) nameplate.

I'd like to have the CNC run off my own laptop/program. I think my netbook's cncsimulator could do it.

So I purchased a UC232A USB-to-serial converter (google "aten", go to the product section, "usb converters" and it should be there). However, the converter converts from USB to DA9 (male). The CNC machine has a DB25 (female) port (and a floopy drive).

I got got this converter not by direct choice, but because I asked the shopkeeper for a converter and had to order. I got a USB-to-DA9 that had a DA9-to-DB25 attached to it (so it would go unto to the CNC's DB25F). The DA9-to-DB25 has no markings of any kind on it.

Question: can I make a connection between my computer with this converter with what I have?

If not ,what converter should I try to get? I have seen another one, however for what is (for me) a hefty price. I may not have a chance to try and connect my laptop to the CNC machine tomorrow (when I go to my lesson).

Well, first thing you will need is a communication program to load your program to the haas memory. You can download a trial version of multi dnc, it gives you 40 hours.

Then you need a USB to 9 pin adapter for your laptop
    A 9 to 25 pin serial cable
Then a db25 null modem adapter.

Or you can make your own cable from 9 pin to 25 pin null modem cable.

Then you need to match all the comm settings between your communications program and the haas controller.

So this hardware CAN communicate with a CNC machine? Because that is what I really have to know.

To repeat: I have a DA9-to-DB-25(male) converter already. Can my PC and a CNC machine communicate with each other with the above stated hardware?

If the converter is null modem, yes. It's not just plug and play, you still need to set up parameters in the machine and pc.

How can I be sure whether the convert (I'm guessing the SA9-to-USB in this case) is a null modem?
