Nitronic 50

Does anyone have any experience with Nitronic 50, I have an order for 15 wear rings to make with it. We are over casting rubber on one side after all maching so Im not exactally sure what its for.

When I started calling steel suppliers a few of them had never heard of it before. I believe there are different series of it "50" is one of them. I had gotten the UNS number on it and it was very similar to a "H43" tool steel, I have never machined that either so am not sure what to expect.

Anyone work with this stuff or have any tricks for it would be great.

After I made my first post I thought to myself "google it retard", so I did.

It is not a tool steel, it is a stainless with twice as much strength as 316. I found a bunch of info on it.

http://www.hpalloy.com/Alloys/Nitron...ITRONIC50.html

Its also known as grade XM-19, and the machinability is less than half of 304 stainless. Wow this should be fun to work, by the way my coolant doesnt work on the lathe im using. I will also have to use HSS tools for certain rads and contours.

Maby I should think before I post, EH

I've milled it several times. Nitronic 60 for me actually.

Closest equivalent I can think of is duplex stainless steel.

I think you would be in the 125 - 150 sfpm range for a coated carbide endmill for example. If I remember correctly it's another one of those materials that needs feed to get better tool life. Possibly work hardening.

I have compleated the job now, it wasnt that bad. Hard on drills and parting inserts otherwise no worse than anything else.

It didnt seem to work harden to much I was quite impressed actually, cake walk for a big operation like this.

250-400 sfpm depending on boreing, turning or parting with coated carbide.
Only 25-30 sfpm for HSS drilling with cutting oil.
