AXYZ makes industrial quality CNC machines (I own one).
They have both stepper and sevo models - most are stepper type.
The machine controller keeps track of where the spindle is (or should be) internally.
Mach 3 does the same thing.
The AXYZ controller allows you to easily move the spindle to any X, Y, Z position within the limits of the machine table in absolute or incremental mode.
I think you will find that most machine controller software will allow this same funtionality as it is basic to any machining operation.
Due to their design, AXYZ stepper machines seldom lose steps without a severe overload/crash.
The AXYZ machines are well engineeered and have robust drive train components designed for commercial use (making money).
You can purchase a commercial CNC machine and be making parts within a day - no fiddling w/ settings or tuning.
If you have questions about the AXYZ machine - call them.
You will be able to speak w/ a knowledgeable tech within minutes.
