using V carve I have a bunch of circles that are to have a finished thickness of .78" I am using 1" walnut boards but they can be inconsistant and I have may change outs to do. what I want to know is if there is a way to set the z zero at the bottom (I know how to set that in v carve) but after that I want to tell it to make a bunch of different cuts .78 .655 .25 ect can v carve think upside down from bottom to top from the z zero or do you have to use the depths from the top down? |

| I don't know. I may have 10,000 4" circle things to cut with veryiing cuts in it but find 477 5" x 96" boards that will be the same thickness. I thought I cout reverse it from the bottom up or I will have to buy a board plainer to get them flat, straight and the same thickness. |

save yourself a lot of grieve and buy yourself a 12 inch planner from dewalt or something equal to it and and a extra set of blades . that is a lot of boards !!! you should be able to get/ request your supplier to send them to pretty close to the finish size that you want . your planer will just give that final finish. |

| That is good info. here is my other problem though I think I got it figured out kinda. These also need to have a 7 DEGREE angle cut to them on the outside cut. Obviously a dove tail or stair stringer bit is 7 DEG and I found one 7/8 long. but is there a easier way to make a LEAD-IN? if the bit plunges straight it will clip the edge where it plunges in and out so I made a path so it cuts past and moves out to plunge but can I set a plunge point? in v carve I also have visual mill if that program may be better at this type of work. Thanks I know these are more Program questions and not about the cnc's but I figure you all have had similar problems/ projects |

| You can easily add lead in's in Vcarve by checking the "lead-in" box.

| to show what I was doing. here they want a 7 Degree angle cut out in a 3.75 circle so I need a lead so the bit does not nip the edge where it plunges since the dovetail bit is fatter at the bottom VS the top side of the bit. |

| If I understand your original question, I think you should be able to accomodate different material thicknesses with your Z work offset. You can still position the part in V-carve in a conventional manner, with Z0 at the top.. Then, set your tool length offsets relative to the bottom location of your stock. Then, if your current work offset is most likely G54 Z0, adjust it upwards by the amount of the stock thickness. No need to repost for different material thickness whatsoever.
