I'm building the SolSylva Belt Drive wood router - or at least something close to it. Using the plans as a general guide, except I strengthening some of the Y & Z parts to avoid flexing - mostly by using steel in some areas instead of aluminum. This makes the Y & Z heavier, of course - maybe by a little more than 25%. I've made a couple CNC wood routers before but have always used lead screws and have no experience with belts. I'm concerned if the additional weight is going to adversely affect performance - other than perhaps me having to adjust my acceleration/deceleration values/speed values a little Out of curiosity - and I realize that this is a very general question: Are there "heavy" industrial routers that commonly use belts? The first machine I built was the first one IO had ever saw so I have nothing to compare with and nothing to do but ask. |
