questions about CNC machines!!

I am just starting to look for a CNC machine, still don't know that much about them but it looks like this is the place for information. Is there any specific machines that people recommend with 4' x 4' cutting area??? Also what kind of software do you recommend to work with the machines??? I will be cutting out basic profiles and engraving. I work with wood 95% of the time. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

There are several post of DIY routers on this forum. CNC VMC's of that size are 100k plus.

Your application would be best served with a CNC router. MACH 3 by Artsoft would be my choice, but there are several to choose from.

One that comes to mind is ShopBot.

Software you will need -
Machine control software, runs machine and interprets machine code.
CAD software - For drawing your parts.
CAM software - Drawers a tool path (machine code) for your CAD drawings.
Some machines are sold with all the software to do this.
Some variations include 3D software and V-carving.
It depend what you are making.

4x4 machines can run 5-9000.00 and that really depends on spindle vs router
vaccum is small and easily achievable with local components,

shopbot has really done well with this

ez-router and camaster have small footprint machines

if you were to get interested in ebay machines new from a particular state let us know before you buy there may be somthing you would need to know,

there is no replacement for great support.
