Tapered bits are a pain to use. You can't just use multiple shallow passes because increasing the depth increases the engagment at the top. What I've sometimes done is to first do the cut with a straight bit. Then take a series of passes from the side with increasing engagement.

You can do automatic multiple passes with Vcarve Pro.
