are expensive servos required?

hello. i'm another newbie. have been talking to a salesman about purchasing a cnc router. i like the router but i don't like the servo upgrade cost. he says i need to go with servos if i want to route hardwoods. i make small furniture and i just want add some relief detail and designs. i do not think i will ever be removing more than a 3/8" of material. i do not need the speed of servos. i do not need .001 precision. i just want to be able to repeat designs on multiple pieces.
do i have to have servos?

Welcome, the major benefit would be that the servos most likely have more torque then the steppers....so steppers might require to move slower or take more shallow cuts.

i guess i need someone to tell me it's worth 2 grand. does anyone here have experience driving a router through hardwood with steppers? tried to call the salesman back to find out power on steppers - busy. what is the limit on depth of cut a stepper can handle in hardwood.
