    proximity switches

    I own a shopbot prt standard 4x8 i want to fit proximity limitswitches on the x and y rails using mechanical contact switches can any advise me about how to go about wiring these switches to the machine? thanks

    1. Buy good switches designed for dirty/wet industrial use (IE: Honeywell microswitch).

    2. Don't use dry use, light duty electrical/electronic switches.

    3. Machine wiring depends on the machine control/controller. Insufficient information to provide specific instructions.

    Proximity switches do not have mechanical contacts.
    If you are looking at true proximity type, there are a few configurations, DC, AC, AC/DC, three wire, two wire.
    For the three wire there are sink or source type.
    Selection depends on the interface used or required.

    I suppose it would be possible to claim that a magnetic reed switch is a proximity switch with mechanical contacts. Provided the machine was not going to be creating particles or dust from a ferromagnetic material they could be a good way to get a combination of durability, dirt proof and electrical simplicity at a low cost.
