    Default Hoss's 3D Printers

Might as well start a separate thread for this because my other thread has skewed onto this topic.
    http://www.cnczone.com/forums/bencht...g0704-227.html
Think it qualifies as a benchtop machine and it IS cnc'ed so....
I just got my kit parts from MakerFarm.com to build a Reprap Prusa 3D Printer.

Have some other parts on the way, electronics, steppers, steel rods
and 3mm ABS and PLA filament.
I have $600 wrapped up but that includes some upgrades and 3mm filament.
    More details later.

Also have a kit from SeeMeCNC.com that uses Mach 3 to run it.

It's a bit cheaper to build if you already have a licensed copy of Mach 3,
even more so if like me you already have the drivers, i.e. chinese boards, g540, xylotex, etc.
pretty much anything to run 4 nema 17 steppers.
I ordered the H1 Parts and Hardware Only Kit for $149.
The complete kit is only $351 (+$148 for Mach 3 if needed)
I'll post more as the parts come in.

Cool Hoss - they do look interesting!

I'm a bit disappointed though that you're not building a Selective Laser Sintering desktop machine - to do metal 3D printing!

    Never say never.
I have looked at the pros doing it on youtube but the "metal" printing was pretty involved.

I just got my extruder and bed heaters up and working, waiting on glass for the heated bed. MK6 hot end but will probably mod it before using since the technology changes overnight. I cant wait to see some of your solutions! Especially using machine tools to help out.

I've made a few mod to my TOM, first was a nice spool feed for the plastic
Image of TOM printable spindle for 5lb spools - Thingiverse

the second was a new driver, had a real problem with the filament stripping when the print I was working on need to do a lot of reversals (damn near everything LOL)

Image of Mk6 extruder drive for 1.75mm filament - Thingiverse

made a huge improvement, a bonus is it's easier to change color now.

Thingiverse is a great resource for projects and ideas, there are a lot of sharp people working with these things

I have been folowing the blog of someone that has built themselves an incredible high quality SLA machine that doesn't look beyond the abilities of the many capable do it yourself-ers on this board. I'll be happy to share some links here in a moment but first I have to get my first post out of the way or the board wont let me post any web addresses.

    Here we are!

3D Printer - High Resolution - Printing Alien Skull - YouTube

Unfortunately, the author of the blog and the machines designer seems to have dropped off the face of the earth shortly after completing the software he designed for the machine.

You can follow the progress of someone who has made a very similar machine, as well as posted a bit more information about the materials that they used and how they did it here:

    3 D L P rint

I believe both just use a DLP projector to harden photo reactive resin in vat one 2d cross section at a time. It's a technique that creates a very high resolution part and it's the process used by most professional 3d printers. If you are feeling adventurous and want something in the future that will give you much finer detail than an extruder can you may want look into building one of these.

If you go to the SeeMeCNC yahoo group, as a member you can download a Mach 3 screnset
they have in the files section.
Looks pretty cool and much simpler screen for the printer.

That video is amazing, i would love ro find some more information on what is actually happening to produce that part, hard to understand without knowing any background on it. it looks like there is a glass lens and as it is pulled up out of the material it somehow tranfers the design patterns in slices maybe? kind of like an MRI machine.. CRAZY watching it happen.

    any more info anywhere?

    Chris

I just spent two hours reading info from the links he posted.
Basically, you have a glass bottomed tank filled with resin. You move a plate down to the bottom, leaving a thin layer of resin, and project the shape onto the plate, curing the thin layer of resin. Move the plate up and repeat, thousands of times. It looks like it takes 5-10 seconds/layer.

They used the background from my Aqua screen for that screenset.

I am curious how well a material like powder coating might work using a hopper setup.
The stuff is very strong and is basically a plastic. Be able to use all kinds of colors. It would, however have to cure all in a short time, so I guess it's out. ABS would be pretty useful I think. Maybe even polycarbonate. I know I am thinking big, but will need to start small. Others have already done the footwork for that.

I do like that Mach 3 interface. It is what I know and will help bring it home, so to speak.

I did see something in one of the videos that looked useful. That was building supports. If you print them at the same time, then you could make a box that gets cut apart later. Kinda like some do in woodworking. That would make sure it would mate properly.

Got to think differently with one of these. It will be the reverse of milling. It's addition rather than subtraction.

I just bought some nice Echain. Now it would certainly take some time, but one could print the parts to make a mold and then use resin to cast them.

Okay, Hoss. I won't post every time my brain lights the bulb over my head.
Glad I am waiting on mine a bit. With your noggin working on these as well, there will surely be some profound insights for those building after you.
