Check for backlash on your axis using a dial indicator.

What you do is move your spindle to somewhere on your table where you can move in the X or Y say 12" For you will zero the DRO for X,Y then you need a dial indicator. You make sure there is some pressure on the dial indicator and set the pointer on the indicator to zero. Now move the spindle one axis at a time something like the following commands:
G1 X12 F50
G1 X0 F50
You have the indicator pointing at zero before the move to X=12 inches. Then you execute the second command, and it should return to where you started. Now if you have no backlash the dial indicator should return to zero. Do the exact same test for the Y axis. In both cases you should be able to return to the start position exactly. If not you have backlash and you can see how much by how far you missed the target.
