Hi! Been a member of the forum for a long time but haven't posted until now  Ok, so, I have a Smithy 1220 3 in 1 i'm looking to CNC in the next month or two. The main concern I have with this conversion is that the spindle only protrudes out about 8 inches not leaving me with very much working room. I was curious if anyone has had success with extending the spindle to give more clearance, or even to create a whole new Z axis with separate motor. I know the smithies are not the best machines around, but I picked mine up for $100 in near new condition and it would be a shame not to do something interesting with it  Oh, another reason I am wanting to relocate the spindle or relocate it is to facilitate adding a ballnut/screw to the Z axis. Any and all help is appreciated!  |
