    Famous presidential speeches.

    Is G.W.B. stretching history a bit or just have bad writers?

    Quote WRT the Mumbai incident:
    "they can count on the people of world's oldest democracy to stand by their side," Bush said at the White House.

    If you split hairs a bit it is more or less correct. It is sort of true that Great Britain has a 'democratic' government earlier than 1776 and of course the ancient Greeks are viewed as having a democratic government but in both these cases participation was restricted to land owners or some other distinctive class. The US was more inclusive provided you were not female or black.
    An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

    He wasn't the first to claim this.

    Clinton used it in his first inaugural address. Colin Powell used it too.

    Not that I am defending the statement, but I sense this tied into a speech the leader of India gave back in 2005.

    Manmohan Singh, in an address to a joint meeting of Congress, spoke broadly of how the world's oldest and largest democracies, once estranged by Cold War politics, were "natural partners."

    And here in febuary of 2008;

    "The world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy are natural partners, sharing important interests and fundamental democratic values," Obama said in a yet to be published article in the ethnic India Abroad newspaper, excerpts of which were given in a write-up on Friday.

    Uh, but it is a bit hyper critical......So, Go ahead, kick a lame duck! This has been a real attention getter since back in 2005 and still gets repeated and derided opportunistically as if another Bushism, but everyone else gets a pass. LOL!

    At least America still has some semblance of democracy.

    For those who don't follow Canuck politics (ie: most sane people), our so-called leaders have been behaving very, very, badly this past week. Coal for all of them this Christmas !!
