| Maybe I'm looking for something I don't need. I've always assumed it would be proper machining practice to use a flute length at least as long as the depth of the cut. Maybe it doesn't matter as long as the shaft size is no large than the flute diameter. Any comments? (I'm a respiratory therapist trying to participate in a hobby requiring the skills of a machinist.) |

Cutting some pockets in wax. On my current project I want to cut some pockets that are about 1-1/2" long, more than 1/8" wide but narrower than 3/16" wide, 1" deep. I haven't been able to find up-cut spiral router bits 1/8" in diameter with flutes more than about 1/2" (deep). By the time the collet eats up 1/3rd of the overall length you don't have much range at all. I've tried drywall cutters with some success but they're not really made for this and don't work optimally. I'm sure I'm not the first to want to cut some deep, narrow channels or vanes in wax. But I sure as hell can't find any long bits. I'd like to have some 1/8" and 1/4" bits with flutes about 1-1/2" and overall length about 3". I'm satisfied they're out there. Just can't find them. |

Good luck. I've never seen any that long. Vortex can custom make them for you. These are the longest tools I've ever seen, but they're for foam. http://www.3dcutting.com/products-fr...imageId=image2

| Of course their out there. I use them in metal cutting all the time but you kept saying what you wanted was "up-cut spiral" router bits in those lengths & sizes. Up-cut spiral router bits are made for WOOD. You can cut plastic with any type of cutter. Think metal working END MILLS not router bits and be free. ![]() P.S. This company will grind any tool. any size that you need. http://swifttool.dirxion.com/entryma...en=1280&os=win |
