Anyone out there running there car on CNG

I was just talking with a friend of mine tonight about gas prices and such, then we starting googling around and found that some are running their cars on CNG at an equivalent of less than a dollar a gallon. Not to mention that some are able to fill up at home.

So if anyone has performed this conversion and has any hot tips I would really be interested in hearing what you have to say.

Geof will become famous soon enough

Did you Google? Conversion kits are available. The disadvantage to cng is that to store enough gas for a decent distance you need a very high pressure tank, something similar to scuba tanks. This means the refilling is not really simple because you are dealing with several thousand psi.

Compressing air is a very energy hungry process. We need to look at the whole process (end to end) to determine just how green it is.

after doing a bit more research into it, It really looks like one would be better off just buying a used cng car somewhere. you can pick up a nice newer civic for not much more than the standard civic. then you can buy the home fueling station, which it looks like there are a couple of different makers of them. sure, it would initially cost a bit more, but if you need to do a lot of driving one could easily recoup the costs of the added expenses.

for the time being though, I think I will try adding an hho cell to my 89 civic hatchback and see if I can't hit some of the fuel mileage numbers others are claiming with that same car. One guy was claiming to get 60mpg regularly. Since they are cheap to build and the circuit to change your fuel mixture is simple enough that looks like the best immediate solution for me. At the moment I drive almost 100 miles everyday. so if I can cut my fuel bill in half I won't be complaining to much.

Once that is done I will look a little farther into the local cng scene. It really looks like the price of NG varies quite a bit from geographic locations. So who knows, I may be in an area where the gas gallon equivalent is over $2 a unit. In which case i would be happy just keeping the old civic (assuming those hho claims are indeed possible) and spending the roughly the same on fuel.

look at propane also

This subject has also generated a huge interest in the 4x4 section of ih8mud.

With the increasing price of fuel just about everyone has changed there lifestyles to do with less Petroleum.

It sucks that alot of us with less to do incomes suffer more then others. I am still thankfull that I am given a gas card to do my service work and do 90% of my driving with the truck.

I am going out today to look at a electric bike motor add on for my mountain bike as a alternative to getting around by car. Seems these crystalyte systems can make your bike go 30 mpg with up to 30 miles on a single charge.

This includes uphills.

But the idea of CNG has been in the back of my mind for a while. IT is a fuel that at least we can control hopefully.
