Moving = No Fun

Just moved my shop out of a rented building into a building I bought. It's amazing how much stuff you can acumulate in 7 years. We lost about 2 weeks total production time. This is my 3rd and final move. First was out of my Dad's garage Approx 480 sq. ft. Second was shop I leased 3200 sq. ft. Finally purchased this building 12,000 sq. ft.

Geof will become famous soon enough

There is one good thing about moving, it prompts you to get rid of all that neat junk that you were keeping just in case it was useful. We have been in the same location nearly 14 years; can you imagine how much 'neat junk' we have.

I must congratulate you on your progression; 480 to 3200 to 12,000 square feet. You are obviously doing a few things the correct way.

I went the opposite direction with my sign shop, as I shifted to more wholesale work. I started with 900 sf commercial space in 1993, moved to 1100, then to 2,000. Last move (in January) was to a spare room in my house over the garage, 18"x24'. Plus I have a spare bedroom for storage and the garage. Up here I just have the laser, 2 plotters, 2 computers and a 4'x 8' work table.

That last move was nasty, we'd had a windstorm knock out power in the whole area, several cities including the old and new locations. When I moved over 3 days it was 20F with no lights or heat, but when the power came back I was ready to go.

I was exhausted from moving my furniture last year, I would hate to think about moving very much machinery.

I built my shop from scratch (timber shop) - not very big at around 200 sqft but took me 6 months to build and finish (including satellite TV, aircon and internet access).

On the day I finished I got a call from the ex-wife saying she wanted to sell the old property and we ended up moving. Had to build a new workshop all over again ........
