| I did a search in cnczone for secondlife. Does anyone else here use SL besides me? For the uninitiated, SL is a 3d online platform in which you may construct innumerable objects (albeit through very primitive modeling methods). The remarkable utlilty to cnczone readers is colaborative construction in a 3d real time environment, and SHARING files. Porting text files of designs to and from SL is effortless. What's not to like here? You'll need a very high end graphics card and HS broadband too, and it will still seem laggy and crash fairly often. Yet it is still the only thing of its kind going. Can 20 people(or even 2) work on a design simaltaneously in googles setchup or anything else? If you're allready a SL'er look me up as Zen Zeddmore. I will share with you the secrets of capturing the mesh data of the environment to your hard drive and how to open and edit those in Blender. and hopefully we can explore how to convert many terrabytes of ppls VR designs into actual RL products. ( not advocating theft in any way , just pointing up the potentials here) hint google "secondlife" and "3dprinting" |

| i have tried it, mainly because i have an interest in collaborative VR and it is quite interesting from an academic standpoint. That said if i put on my software developer hat for a minute, it is very rough around the edges. I dont know if its just because im not in US, but the client is really slow when other people are around, and the graphics / engine is pretty simplistic by modern standards. I have since stopped using it, and although i like the idea. Its a real shame someone big doesnt buy it out and do a revamp of the servers / software. I would have thought for the likes of novell or ibm it would be a real good investment, and with a more flashy client, you could probably pull in some serious real world advertising / product placement $. |
