The state of society in this country | | I guess this is kind of an expansion on the thread below about the state of the Machinist. There are just somethings that irk me about today's society. I don't know if anyone has heard of Jeff Cooper but he used to write a column in the back of Guns and Ammo magazine called Cooper's Corner. Every now and then he would refer to modern society as "the age of the wimp". I am beginning to agree more and more.
For example, I live in Southwest FL and a few days ago we discovered that a six foot gator has taken up residence in the pond in back of the house. I thought this was cooler than s***. I don't mind gators. I've been within 20 ft of them (by mistake, of course) and they're just like any other wild animal - leave it alone and it will leave you alone. Not surprisingly, I was the only one that felt this way. One of the neighbors chimed in "just think my kids play there, and my pet dog, and my cat...We have to get it removed..." I don't know why but that just struck a nerve with me. Gators have lived in Florida a lot longer than this jerk and yes they have been known to live in the water. If you fear for your pets and kids etc. then why would you build your house near the habitat of the most widely known wild creatures in the Southeast? I mean here's your sign pal. The way I see it, if you don't want to get bit by a bear, than don't go into the woods. If you're scared of alligators, don't move to Florida.
I'm not saying that the guy shouldn't be concerned about his family. I'm just saying that people are selfish hypocrites. This guy didn't care that the gator would most likely be killed by a trapper if the authorities were called, he just didn't want it in HIS backyard. Like the guy that builds his house next to a 70 year old rifle range and then complains about the noise. And the people that ***** and moan about helping the hungry as they throw out half their dinner because they're full. What's wrong with this picture? I really think that if this country had to face what we faced in WWII today, we'd be up that creek without a paddle.
Just had to get that off my chest.
Rant over
