Howdy Zoners, I have been looking aorund for various types of wood to do photocarving. I seen a pic of a Monopoly board that just looked awesome. I cant figure out what type of wood it is just by looking. Not sure if its a solid piece or what. Please input on what type of wood you guys use. Thanks Steve |

Go to Lowes and get the poplar boards in the back. They are 10 or 12 " wide look for the whitest, don't get the green it does not show the whites to well when finishing. I tried a piece of yellow heart I got at the local woodcrafters store in Knoxville. Stuff smelled like bug spray when engraving it. Or you could go to Chattanooga hardwoods in east ridge and get some maple boards it does really well when finishing. I did not get the mill yesterday, I found a real deal on a lathe I will look at tomorrow night. An Enco 12x36

Yea, I went to Lowes this morning before getting here to work. Most of the popular that they had was Green. So I headed to Home depot and all they had was the same crap. While looking around in the store I found a shelve of 24 x 48 Birch ply at 1/2" thick. Do you think that it might work for cutting at .022. It was only $12.00. ( Didnt get it though but it was a clean looking board) Steve

This is the Monopoly board ( http://www.cnczone.com/gallery/showfull.php?photo=3627 ), that planekrazie, was talking about. That is cool! You could make your own custom version, that would last forever! ![]() .

Its difficult to tell with the stain on it. I can tell you its not ply. I use "hard" maple for cast tile patterns. The grain structure holds together great for detail carving. Forget h.d. and lowes. Find a specialty wood supplier. You'll be better off. I even notice thier MDF sucks compaired to what I get from my suppliers. Timber Woods, Woodworks supply, Speilman supply are my local sources. I'm sure if you look, try the phone book, you'll find a local wood supplier that can point you in the right direction for your needs..022 is pretty shollow if your trying to replicate the board in the image.Good luck Todd http://www.innovative-accents.com

I've used fairly green poplar with good results (http://exactworks.com/portfolio/main...&g2_itemId=75). Got that board from lowes and I worried about it turning out since the board was pretty green, but with the darker stain on it, the image popped right out. Hard to photograph the results acurately, they always look better in person.
