    pantograph conversion

Hi everybody, new here and eager to start my first project. This is what I am trying to do http://www.famcomachine.com/pgraph.htm. I would greatly appreciate some advice, recommendations concerning this type of conversion. I have been searching the archives for a similar project but have come up dry. My back ground is that of a Machinist , so the machining end isn't a problem but I am still trying to calculate the size of slides and steppers to use for this application. And lastly if any one has any idea of how they worked the z axis in this conversion.
    Thanks

    progress report

I am having a hard time figuring out a workable configuration for the z. I only have an inch between the upper casting and the end of the spindle. The principle of my idea is to have the screw fixed to the top of the spindle and the nut revolve around it. I hope my pics can demonstrate what I am trying to do. In the stock configuration you can release the spindle and it is free to float up and down. This is what I am trying to take advantage of.
Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thank you
