Where to buy this.

I ask this question on a sign making forum but never really got an answer. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there was a place that sells the fluorescent light by itself without the sign on the link below. Thanks- Robbie

I have one of those at our shop and looked inside once. It was all made overseas and I couldn't find much more info. If I can find it I will look again and post what I find. I have sold a few simalar signs using cold cathode tubes in my own enclosure. I was able to get them cheap though a comuter case moding guy I know who imports them. They work almost as well as the fluorescent and run off of 12v dc which was better for my application.

They look like something you could find at Spencers, a pet shop (for aquariums/terrariums), a plant shop (grow light) or, don't laugh, a "Head Shop".

Wait a few months and they'll probably have cases of them at The Dollar Store, Wal-Mart or Dollar Tree.

How easy is it to detatch or replace the piece of acrylic? Was the light source coated to produce the color or is there a colored plastic strip that the light passed through to make the red, blue, green, yellow, orange, or violet colors "in" the acrylic?

I had been planning to make some of these lights when/if I ever get my cnc built. When I first seen em I thought they were powered by LED's which is what I was going to build mine with since LED's are rather cheap. You can make them with LED's or the fluorescent bulb. I don't know the source of the fluorescent bulb and I figured LED's would last longer anyways so thats what I decided to do. Anywho.......I haven't really looked around for the source of the alum. channel to hold the acrylic sheet yet. I'll go browse around and see if I can find the source for it.

Haytay.... I'm sure that you could buy one and it would be easy to change the acrylic sheets out. All that holds it....is pretty much a straight channel that the alum. peice slides onto and whatever color light is on the inside is what color the light lights up as.

Just ran accross this illustration of the alum. channel types.
The type that you posted cncrob would be the alum channel on the right.

I'm guessing one could take square tubing and cut a slit down the center of one side of it and insert the electronics and the acrylic in.

This cosign company is in Belgium and supplies lights and such but I'm not sure how much it would cost for the stuff. I'd rather shop locally to atleast keep the production price down.

I bet you could make that out of a PVC Pipe with a slot cut into it, the length/thickness of the acrilyc, add a end cap to both ends, a fluorescent light/LED inside the PVC pipe, and seal everything up.
