Your experiences with 80/20 surplus

Not quite sure if this post is better suited in another forum, but here goes.

I bought some extrusion from 80/20 surplus (the ebay store). The following items:
48x2x1 2 of these, and each weighs 4lbs according to auction
68x1x1 1 of these, each weighs 4lbs according to auction

They said to wait for an invoice before paying, for shipping charges and all. Well i did, and for that 30 dollars i have a 24 dollar shipping charge

So i go to the UPS calculate cost page and assuming the following conditions, i got 15.55:

No box, just aluminum is sent.
Total package dimensions are 68x3x1
No daily pickup, and no UPS account. (although they probably have one or both).
12 pounds (4x3)

And got 15.55 for UPS ground...

Has anybody else experienced this with the seller?

Hmm, everything I have ordered from them (and that is quite a bit!) has been very well packaged (yes, in a box). Very fast shipping too.

I have nothing but positive things to say about them.

Are you really saying they shipped your extrusions with no packaging?

Good guys

I have bought quite a bit of stuff (lot of items, not necessarily high dollar) from 8020 Surplus and Mark and Tim have always treated me well. I have been in contact with them regarding kits for my cnc router that I sell plans for and also other items as well. All products have been delivered in a very timely manner and very well packaged. Always thought the pricing was very fair (shipping costs to).

If you feel you have been treated unfairly (mistakes can happen) drop them a line and explain your situation. They seem to be quite fair and very responsive.

Well i just assumed it was not in a box, because thats how a lot of metal is shipped.
My school gets these 6foot 3" dia brass bars delivered once in a while. THe UPS sticker is right on the brass.

I sent them an email though. I mean im not demanding refund or anything, i just think that a more accurate way of calculating shipping charges would be nice, so i know this before the auction.

Still, i look forward to the extrusion . Going for all the all aluminum router

While I've not done business with them, you do need to consider that shipping is more than the cost of postage. Labor to package and cost of packaging. Depending on the nature of their shipping it may also need to include the expense of delivery to UPS.

Ask before you buy.

pm this was the biggest surprise I had when I opened my business and began shipping product. The time and cash required for shipping is not a small item. I used to get all bent out of shape when I saw "Shipping and Handling". After doing a lot of that "Handling" I don't complain any more!

Exactly. I used to screw myself on shipping when I sold stuff on eBay. I always used to eat and extra $3-$10 (!) since I never figured in packaging and handling (gas to drive to UPS does cost a dollar or two - only fair to myself to figure that in). Plus, the 80/20 surplus guys do ship their extrusions in a box - and well packaged.

I agree with others, the folks at 80/20 are great. Wait until you see the packaging they send you - it's industrial grade. If they don't print the shipping costs is likely because it much depends on exactly what you purchase and they want to be fair... but I guess they can always "round up" and put it on one of those shipping buttons in their auctions.

They add a $4.00 handling fee on top of the shipping.

Here is what they say on almost all their listings.

SHIPPING & HANDLING

A $4 handling fee will be applied to cover shipping material expense.
We will combine S&H for multiple items.
Items will ship within 3 business days from Columbia City, IN 46725.
We will assume a residential address unless otherwise informed.
Use UPS.Com Time & Cost estimator for approximate S&H cost.

I've bought from them and they were 1st class all the way around.

i have to say as well i have bought from them and have been extreamly happy with them. i bought 6 sticks of 1515 at 8 foot and the shipping was very reasonable. the cost savings in buying from them has saved tons of money.
