There's nothing saying that shortages and subsequent high prices won't lead to excessive profits. It is the consumers competing against each other that gives these absurd profits. Too bad for us that we have been hoodwinked by advertising that cars are a God-given right. They aren't. We've allowed ourselves to be set up for the kill.

I just can't stand all the car commercials since Katrina hit... all of a sudden gas mileage has become a major selling point of all car manufacturers. Talk about pandering to people's weakness. Ya know what? I say lets DOUBLE the price of gas in this country. Then we'd be more on par with the rest of the world. I'd like to see how many SUV's would still be on the road. Hey, people might actually start car pooling

I agree. If you compare the price of gas here in the US - $3.00 and the UK $7.00 (corrected for UK/US gallon) it looks like the UK is way more expensive right?

In both countries the price is made up of Gas company cost and the Tax. Tax in the UK is over 80% on Gas, in the US it's around 25%. you do the math..

Where did you get the 18% gas tax figure? There is import tax, federal tax, state tax and county tax on gas. I think if you looked at "all" the tax tacked on to a gallon of gas I bet it around 75%.

Can't find the current import tax.

Fed is 18.4¢ / gal
State tax ranges from 7¢ to 32¢ /gal
National avg total tax 46¢ /gal
Currently gas is $2.50/gal
46/250 = 18.4%
Interesting though, the taxes were the same when gas was $1.50 gal.
46¢ / $1.50 = 30%
Woohoo! Our taxes have gone down 40%

my parents owned a gas station from about 1967 to 1995 and in the early days of say...25c/gal they made about 10c/gal of that to lets say the 70's what about 70c/gal? they made about 50c/gal then. then came the gas "Crunch" can you say misleading hype? the taxes and "costs went way up and by the time they wen BK in 1995 prices were somewhere around lets say 1.20/gal they got a whopping 3c/gal for their troubles. and if thats not enough in early 1995 we were paying Union about 3500.00 rent for a 1500sq/ft building and in late 1995 it went to .... hold on to your hats.......10,000.00/month!

Ya I would have to say some of those oil companies are making money!

Want the price to go down?? Quit buying gas, walk, bike, tele-commute. I know these are not options for everyone.

Our family converted to all diesel over the last 2 years, and now there is a $0.70/gal difference in cost. INSANE.

I can't believe the guberment can control the price any more than I can. Short term refining issues are what we have now, and people friggin line up for hours to get $10/gal fuel.

One thing capitalism does is allow you to price according to what people will pay. Good or Bad. You want the guberment to say you can only charge $35/hr for your work? I don't.

And why should I pay, or care, what people outside the US are paying for fuel. I hate it when people compare our cost of fuel to UK/Europe. No comparison. They work a lot less than us in the US too. Doesn't Germany take month off in the fall. I wish I could take more than a week off at a time. Two different countries/cultures, no comparison.

And I LOVE my crew cab 1 ton F350 diesel, 14 mpg, but I drive my VW Jetta TDI, 48 mpg, daily.
