There are several devices that work with mach3 and USB.
Check out the SmoothStepper and KFLOP.
There's also the Centipede, which is a PCI card for Mach3.
I have a 3-axis CNC machine that uses Mach 3 and Geckodrive GREX G100 motion controller. I haven't really followed the cnc world for last year and half due to numerous projects but i want to get back to cnc.
Is there anything new that came out in terms of software and controllers? Is Mach3 pretty much what you folks still use? I'd like to move away from it for stability reasons. How about controllers, is there anything new on the market that is usb or ethernet based that has pretty fast pulse rate?
Please let me know.. all your replies would be greatly appreciated.

You could try Flashcut, or WinCNC.
Or this one.

Try emc2.
LinuxCNC.org - Home
Look at mesa hardware or pico systems.
EMC Documentation Wiki: EMC2 Supported Hardware
It runs on linux and is very stable. I have a few machines running it - one router style using the printer port for step/dir and a full hmc with pallets, tool changer, closed loop servos and all the bells and whistles. (using mesa interface hardware)

Love it. very scaleable.

Edit - it is also free and opensource.
