    interview questions for cnc operators

Hello, I'm Pat F. from Gauthier Biomedical, programmer/ supervisor.
I'm looking for a list of questions that our temp service can use to pick out potential employees. Can someone help me out?
    Thanks Pat

I think the #1 question would be, Regardless of you Ethnic background or Nationality
can you communicate. #2, can you read our prints and do you understand Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. And #3 would be can you use a Calipers and read a Micrometer.

    1. Do they have a High School diploma? None or a GED is a red flag IMHO.

    2. Time in field? ie. how long have they worked in CNC and what did they do?

    3. What was their job? Fifteen years as a green button pusher is only good if that is all you're looking for. A red flag though if you want more.

    4. Shop taught, or school taught? Both have their pluses and minuses.

    5. What controls/machines?

    6. Can they hand program? (Very important for finding CAM problems)

    7. Can they CAM program, and if so, which program(s)/version(s) do they know?

If all you're looking for is a green button pusher, about the most important question is if they are color blind... Just about any mouth breather can load parts and hit a button.

As far as communication/intelligence, they will let you know by the way they are able to articulate their answers.

    More questions.

    1. Can they read a blue print?

    2. Can they read a micrometer, vernier, indicator?

    3. Can they do set up?

    4. Are they comfortable converting metric to inch and vice versa?

    5. Do they have their own tools?

    6. Have they taken any courses in Statistical Process Control?

Naturally, the more experience, the higher the pay scale. You might get a very well qualified operator that is willing to do the work just to get a foot in the door. Don't pass them by with the assumption they are overly qualified. Most shops will welcome the added experience unless it is a recent grad that has the wrong impression of their worth and knowledge breadth.

Might help if the applicant knows and understands the Cartesian and Polar co-ordinate systems.

Well right away you have eliminated Art who wrote Mach as well as the current Gear cutting software. Geartronic? Maybe..

I think he also worked many years in the motion control business related to the medical field.

So maybe High School completion isn't all the good an indicator....

For every Art, I can show you 500 losers. Sure there are exceptions to the rules everywhere in all walks of life. Thing is, they are exceptions. Do you really want to wade through all the chaf looking for that one Art?

    1. Technical skills. Instead of asking yes / no questions, ask the person to tell you how they might approach a specific problem, and focus on basics. For example: do you know manual machining? vs. Tell me how you would make a square block from round stock. Have some artifacts for them to measure. Give them a blueprint and have them describe how they would make the part.

    2. Values. This calls for hypothetical situations. You wake up in the morning and your car won't start. What do you do? Give them a problem they can't solve with the available information and see if they would ask for help. Ask them how customers measure value.

    3. Logistics. Another hypothetical about how to meet a customer deadline which requires them to process one part all the way through before starting another part. Ask them to describe their approach to determining processing sequence. Do they think about the end of the process and how to meet critical characteristics, or do they dive in and try to make chips right away without thinking it through.
